Sawhney Builders begins

Late Shri Narender Singh Sawhney starts a building firm in Dehradun. He sets it on two pillars, commitment and delivery, and on a motto the family still keeps: Virtus et Labor, virtue and hard work.

He chose to build it on pure ethics, because, as he put it, a person is defined by the values he lives by, and so is an organisation. He believed in people and in teamwork, and the team he gathered site by site, engineers, supervisors and craftsmen who learned the work alongside him, became the backbone of the firm.

Those first 23 years included work for the DRDO, at Air Force Station Sarsawa, and on a range of state level and private projects. Each was won on the quality of the one before it, and most came through the recommendations of the people he had built for.

Everything the company is today stands on that foundation: the clients who still call us first, the team that still builds to his standard, and a family name that still means a promise kept.

Indian Military Academy, Dehradun

Our first work for the Indian Military Academy

The Academy, founded in Dehradun in 1932, trains the officers of the Indian Army. Our first work there was in 1994. It has called us back since: for living accommodation for two more companies of Gentleman Cadets, the Hoshiyar Singh Gymnasium for 1,500 and an Olympic size indoor pool.

Jolly Grant, Dehradun

The Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust

We begin building for the hospital trust at Jolly Grant: a PG hostel, a research building, a Panchkarma centre and the hospital extension.

28 years on, the Trust still entrusts its building work to us: today, seven UG blocks, three PG blocks and a cafeteria block for the Swami Rama Himalayan University.

The Doon School

Our first work for The Doon School: retrofitting, strengthening and special repairs of Hyderabad House and Kashmir House, two boarding houses, carried out while the boys lived in them.

Over the next 12 years the school called us back five more times: the Chandan Kilachand Music School, holding houses and teachers’ residences, the central dining hall and Jaipur House, the Art School, a Master House and the sports pavilion, and in 2011 the Head Master’s residence. In 2003 the Headmaster wrote that our work was “completed to our complete satisfaction and within the established schedules.”

Tyagi Vihar, Lucknow

Homes for the Army Welfare Housing Organisation

About 2,14,000 sq ft of homes for the families of serving and retired Army personnel. The work was certified complete on 15 December 2008.

Dehradun

Arborea, our first homes

Our first residential project: a stilt and four floors, and one of the first multi level residential blocks in Dehradun. Homes now make up about a third of our work.

Unison World School

Phase III of the campus: a multi storey RCC frame with complete finishing, handed over on 31 March 2013, in the 30 months allowed.

Three more projects followed for the same group: DIT University, IMS Unison University and Wellington College International School in Pune.

Sawhney Builders becomes Sawhney Buildwell LLP

On 22 April 2016 Sawhney Builders became Sawhney Buildwell LLP, a limited liability partnership. The family, the people and the way of working carried on as before.

DIT University, Phase III

Academic blocks and the administrative building, a basement and seven storeys, with the electrical, water supply, firefighting and waterproofing works. The university’s report rated our work outstanding for quality, financial soundness and technical proficiency.

Indian Military Academy, Dehradun

An Olympic size indoor pool for the Academy

A pool for the training of cadets, handed over on 16 December 2020, the date in the contract. The Academy’s report rated the work outstanding on all five counts.

Sahastradhara Road, Dehradun

Pacific Golf Estate, one of nine for Pacific

Residential towers below the foothills, and one of nine projects for Pacific Development Corporation, in Delhi, Dehradun, Greater Noida, Jaipur and Faridabad: malls, a metro station, a bus terminal and a school.

Clement Town, Dehradun

Four phases, each one early

KLP for 14 Signal Regiment, for the Military Engineer Services. The contract set a completion date for each of four phases. Each phase was handed over 170 days before its date, the last on 26 February 2023.
